The Theme of Manipulation in George Orwell´s Nineteen Eighty-Four and Joseph Heller´s Catch-22

The goal of this diploma thesis is to analyse the motif of manipulation in the most renowned dystopian work of the 20th century, that is in the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by the British author George Orwell and in the anti-war satirical novel Catch-22 by America's Joseph Heller. The thesis opens with a chapter dealing with the theoretical matters of the work. This part briefly discusses the concepts related to the analysed novels. The next part of the thesis introduces the authors of the novels in question, their life journeys and development leading to the creation of their most famous novels. The final two chapters contain the analyses of the works with Orwell's novel coming in first place, followed by Catch-22. In conclusion, the author compares manipulation in both works. While analysing manipulation in the said works, the author focuses not solely on its societal impact, but also on the ways in which manipulation influences individuals in the universes created by Orwell and Heller.

In its complexity, human existence cannot be systematised and generalised into a compact concept. Existentialists are those who devoted themselves to Human individuality and phenomena fundamentally related, such as life, death, freedom, absurdity etc. However, considering the specifics of the philosophy of existentialism, it is not possible to only consider philosophers as the only bearers of this intellectual approach, but it is necessary to include certain individuals of world literature in this movement. The concept of human existence has transformed itself in various ways in their philosophy and works. Once it was dominated by the existence of God, to whom it was necessary to set one's mind on, at other times it was thrown into the bleakness and futility of a world without hope. However, the central topic was the same in each of them, the subject that is closest to us people, however, the subject that will always be the great unknown, regardless of the genial thoughts of Sören Kierkegaard, Martin Heidegger, Fjodor Michajlovič Dostojevsky and Albert Camus - the topic of mankind and its place in the world.

Flat and formalistic approach in law Many processes in law take place automatically and through inertial force, without admitting one's free will and without encompassing values important to man (freedom, dignity, justice). The bearers of the process of automation in law are Machines (or Automats), i.e. tools ensuring primary legal certainty. However, in addition to the subpage of legal certainty, law also consists of the subpage of justice and effectiveness, which is not controlled by Automats, because their algorithms do not often reflect this subjective dimension in law. The trend of automation in law undoubtedly contributes to a number of improvements, however, there appear risks as well. Since the human soul cannot be programmed by Automats, it cannot be assumed that their decision-making, i.e. their output, will be fair and effective in all circumstances. However, in traditional approach in law this output is considered equal to a binding legal norm. As an example of Automat in the field of mobility the traffic lights may serve, in the field of state administration there are automatic forms or formulas, in the judiciary Automat is represented by a judge acting as a robot (subsumption automat), and artificial intelligence may be seen as the most sophisticated Automat of all. Polish and Czech nonsense literature for children

The diploma thesis describes Polish and Czech nonsense in children's literature. The main goal is to define nonsense literature, its development from a historical and formative point of view, considering contemporary events. The first part of the thesis focuses on the theoretical definition of the term nonsense and its historical aspect, especially on the two key representatives of English nonsense Edward Lear and Lewis Carroll. The next part deals with the development of Polish nonsense in children's literature. Two main authors, Julian Tuwim and Jan Brzechwa, who are considered as the creators of the new poetic school, took part in the formation of nonsense in Poland. Absurd humour and the world of children readers became the main inspirations for their work. This poetics was followed by other representatives of the Polish nonsense, including Ludwik Jerzy Kern, Wanda Chotomska and others. The work also focuses on the development of Czech nonsense for children, its main personalities and major works, which are based on nonsense, absurdity and word play. The diploma describes nonsense work for children of Josef Kainar, Jiří Kolář, Miloš Macourek, Pavel Šrut and other writers of literature. The thesis deals with the use of absurdity in documentary cinema and its role in our understanding of the world. It defines the absurdity as an illusion of nonsense (or sense) which arises from removing various phenomena from their usual contexts and putting them together while forming a new, unusual context. These new contexts may not be entirely random and often have a specific function in a number of artistic works. By dissolving the illusion of the non/sense we can acquire a deeper insight into certain matters. But even if the illusion remains, the absurdity itself stimulates our imagination by questioning our patterns of perceiving the world. The author discusses various cases of absurdity that arise from ideologies, inventions, encounters of remote paradigms or contradictory information in the human mind and their use in documentary films, including his own works.

World War 1 in Czech and World Literature

in English language This bachelor thesis deals with the comparison of the World War I reaction in Czech and world literature. Three works from the Czech literature and two novels from the world literature were chosen. Each of them has been analysed regarding its composition, characters and the main idea. The main focus was on how the war effected the human behaviour. In the analyses the historical context and individual authors were taken into account. In the course of writing the thesis was found out that the WWI reactions differ in many ways regarding for the authors' intentions, their personal war experience and also for the war situation which each of the authors' home country was in.
García Márquez's Leaf Storm in Comparison with One Hundred Years of Solitude

(in English) The topic of this thesis is the early novel of the Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez called Leaf Storm (La Hojarasca). To provide a comparison with another book, this work also deals in brief with the author's most known novel One Hundred Years of Solitude (Cien años de soledad). The Leaf Storm is considered by the author himself as a direct predecessor of One Hundred Years of Solitude, however, they are two very different books. On the next pages I will dedicate my attention to the several aspects of the novel Leaf Storm. Specifically, I will focus on the composition, Macondo, the violence in the story, the significance of "storm" in the name of the book, the atmosphere, the novel as a modern version of an ancient tragedy, the mystery and the absurdity, the concept of the time and at last, the theme of solitude. Both novels take place in Macondo and describe similar historical events, yet they are very different concerning their composition - meanwhile One Hundred Years of Solitude is from this point of view much more traditional, Leaf Storm is considered more experimental. One Hundred Years of Solitude is one of the major works belonging to the magic realism, whereas Leaf Storm is a rather realistic book.
